An exciting update on the restoration of Sheerness Dockyard Church

Despite the huge challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis our project to repair and transform Dockyard Church remains very much on track. Our plans to create a new youth enterprise business incubator, supporting young people to build thriving new businesses, remains at the heart of the project. The initiative also includes the conservation of the great Dockyard Model, sections of which will be displayed in the restored building, as well as a new community cafe and event space.

The Grade II* listed 1820's church, which was badly damaged by fire in 2001, is an architectural masterpiece and one of the most important buildings at risk in the south east of England.

In 2017 the restoration project was awarded a £4.75m grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and this has since been matched with nearly £3m of grants from some of the UK’s leading philanthropic trusts, foundations and individuals.

We are delighted to report that the project is currently progressing well. The tender for the main contract is well underway and we hope to make a final decision on the appointment during August 2020. Work onsite to restore the Dockyard Church will begin soon afterwards and we aim for the building to be open by the middle of 2022.
